The National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region VII participated in World Obesity Day by joining an online forum on March 3, 2023, with the goal of encouraging and supporting practical actions to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and reversing the global obesity crisis.
The theme for the 2023 celebration was "Changing Perspectives: Let’s Talk About Obesity," aiming to correct misconceptions, end stigmas, and shift from single views to shared strategies.
Obesity can be caused by various factors, including biological conformation, mental health, genetic risk, environment, healthcare access, and access to ultra-processed food. It can lead to chronic diseases, including COVID-19 complications.
Preventing obesity can be done by creating supportive environments and communities to make healthier choices more accessible, available, and affordable. The food industry can promote healthy diets by reducing fat, sugar, and salt content in processed foods and ensuring healthy and nutritious choices are available and affordable.
Obesity can also affect children's physical health, social and emotional well-being, and self-esteem, and prevention and treatment are critical to stop the global obesity epidemic.//MIND 7, with DMO II Gabe Henriel P. Sucalit, RND, of NNC Region VII
